The Flow of Things

This series of works seeks to redefine the boundaries of this domain by offering a decolonial perspective on historical narratives and personal archives. By leveraging open-access image archives and my photography, this project challenges dominant visual representations of the past and offers a novel approach to collective memory and identity formation. Drawing on ongoing efforts to decolonize various humanities disciplines, this project aims to reconceptualize the epistemological and aesthetic foundations of visual narratives. The methodology involves critically engaging with open-access image archives, unraveling and recontextualizing past narratives. The project employs collage as its primary medium, drawing from arts-based research methodologies.

Alnis Stakle (1975, Latvia) is a Latvian photographer and Professor of Photography at Rigas Stradins University. He holds a PhD in art education from Daugavpils University. Stakle's work critically examines the visual representation of collective and private trauma, loss, and memories, while also exploring the materiality of photography. Employing both documentary and conceptual approaches, his works investigate how sociopolitical ideas can be examined through fact and fiction, as well as the interplay between collective and subjective experiences.
